Depending on various reasons, including where you live in the world may explain your desire to learn Italian. In the United States, for example, there are many people that have Italian family and heritage that can motivate them to learn to speak Italian. Being bilingual can improve your career prospects and is a skill that few others will have.
For those in Europe, living or visiting Italy will obviously be much improved with some Italian language skills. Retiring folks that wish to settle in Italy would also benefit with language skills.
Thus, if you have the desire to speak Italian, what is the best way to learn Italian such that it is a fast process ? Not many people like to learn words and verbs in a rote fashion so what is the best way to learn Italian ?
Learning grammar and vocabulary is never fun. Human beings are remarkably lazy when they have to learn things like words or formal rules !). Ultimately, we pick up these skills through repetition and a desire to use the language.
Observing how a baby learns their native tongue is a perfect illustration of this method. The baby hears and watches his/her mother saying words. At some point in the future the baby starts to understand the words meaning. The next want is to be involved in the speaking.
S/he will try to make simple attempts at talking and speaking the language. He/she effectively mimics the words and sounds made by his/her parents. Inevitably s/he will be able to say the the odd word or two. They may not sound exactly right but he/she refines the pronunciation by watching and listening to people around him/her until it sounds right.
Eventually, he/she will be able to speak simple sentences like ‘I want an orange’. When this stage arrives, he/she has everything needed to learn the language. Soon his/her ability to speak will come on at a rapid pace.
He/she will learn new words and start using them. He/she will communicate with people around and learn from these little everyday language lessons. This will convince him/her to learn more of the language. He/she will listen to his parents and grandparents who will teach him/her new words and explain meanings. He/she will never stop learning new things about the language just like everyone else.
To duplicate this method when learning a second language, you want to learn through immersion. The immersion process starts by spending time in a country where the language you desire to learn is the first language.
This may be extremely nerve wracking initially. You are going to a country where you don't speak the language, although you will probably have some simple words and understanding of the language. You will be taking a course in the country where the language is spoken, thus replicating the way a child may learn his or her first language.
You will have no option but to listen to this language. If you want to speak you will have to speak in this language. all the strategies that a child uses to learn his native tongue will be in place for you.
Learning a new language is a complicated process and having the right attitude, like a genuine desire to talk to people, can help when you hit the wall in you language learning goal. If you take a course in Italy then the support in your desire to learn will be greater.
So I would suggest the best way to learn Italian quickly is to spend a little time in Italy and take an intensive course at the same time. Another tip is to stay in the country a little bit longer after the course so that you can practice outside of the formal lessons with locals. Ideally, you should work and live there for a few months. This will do wonders for your understanding of the language. Keep on studying the language. You never stop learning.
