Learning to speak Italian (or another second language) is a great method of self improvement. The information you will discover whilst learning Italian will hold you in good stead not only for Italian but your own native tongue and even general knowledge. For example, your English grammar will improve if you learn Italian grammar. For instance, this could help you in your prose or even make you a better presenter or speech giver.

Then live in Italy for a while. You could even do some simple jobs there too. If you do all these things I would say you will have a good understanding of the language within 6 months to a year. You'll certainly be able to chat confidently and understand what is going on.

Unfortunately, most people don’t have this luxury. They have a time sapping job or have to care for their family. Unfortuantely they do not have the time to put towards learning Italian.

If this sounds like you then you need to organize your time and structure your learning so that you are working smarter rather than harder. Set up a study routine. Determine a given day and time when all your concentration is set to learning Italian. No distractions or other things to do. Pure focus on the task.

Get a good home study course or take a night class so that you have a specific thing that will be the focal point of your studies. As you get your teeth into the meat (or nut roast if you are a vegetarian) of the course you will find that you can concentrate quicker on the lesson at hand.

The course is your focal point. This content should take up 80% of the time you have set aside to learning to speak Italian however as you get more discerning you can utilize other methods. You will be able to use other methods that are less formal and more fun to learn to speak Italian. So you could check ou the latest Italian movies or TV programs. This will help you in many ways like vocabulary or grammar construction. But it will be enjoyable too and not like a lesson. When you reach this level, learning Italian will just be something you do rather than a conscious act that may become tedious or boring. This heralds the start of your language learning proper.
