People call French the language for lovers. That may be why people have an interest in a French dictionary. It could also be simply to learn a little bit about French words.
Many language students have a French dictionary. This tool allows people to easily find words to see what they are in the other language. Of course it’s very handy to have.
As the Internet developed more and more French dictionaries went online. Alta Vista and now Google have translation services. These can be used to translate sentences or entire blocks of text. Many people use this during online chat with people who don’t speak the same language.
Here are some words from a French dictionary. Bread heated over some kind of flame is toast. There are a lot of different toasts. These include French toast which is called eggy bread parts of the United Kingdom. The French call it pain perdu. It’s made by dipping the bread in egg and frying it. It can be topped with things like syrup and strawberries.
But in a French dictionary the word toast would be a phrase delivered in honor of something. We’re familiar with this when the best man toasts the bride and groom at a wedding reception. The French phrase is en l’honneur de.
A French dictionary will contain the word bread. That’s pain. It’s really loaf as in a loaf of soap. French people often enjoy panade – bread soup.
In a French dictionary word restaurant would be Café. We use that word in English as well as we use the word restaurant. A restaurateur in French is a person who owns a restaurant. In that language it’s a masculine noun.
Pomme is in the French dictionary as the word for potato. Pommes frites are what we call French fries in America. The children’s television host Fred Rogers once bought some pommes frites from Chef Brocket. Potato soup is pommes de la soupe. Some who wanted cheese on a potato would ask for pommes du fromage.
As you can see a French dictionary as more uses than just for love.
