The world as it is today is tremendously different from what it was barely 100 years ago. There are a number of cultural, social and economic avenues that are available to us today. This could barely have been imagined at the turn of the 20th century.

Due to developments in transportation, technology and the means of communication, the world that we live in today is one big village. People of one country can think in terms of settling down in another part of the world, in search of better employment and educational opportunities.

People today have a much greater exposure to the different cultures of the world.  English is a link language that breaks barriers between different people. The language does have its limitations however since it is spoken by only 5 to 6 per cent of people in the world.

It makes sense in today’s context to learn a foreign language. Not only does knowledge of a foreign language helps us to learn about other people, it is also beneficial in other ways.

There has been a phenomenal growth in the demand for people who know foreign languages. Interpreters and language teachers of foreign languages are well paying jobs. This is partly because of the increasing number of opportunities in foreign trade, tourism and travel. If you have made up your mind to learn a foreign language, then the only question that you need to answer is the language that you need to learn.

In order to decide the language that you need to learn, you need to decide the region of the world in which you are interested. We can talk about the Middle East for instance. The majority of countries in the Middle East speak Arabic. It is the mother tongue of about 350 million people spread over 20 countries. If you are interested to study Arabic, then it is good to know that the US government provides incentives to people who know Arabic. The Middle East represents vast potential in terms of unexplored markets for commodities, goods and services.

The Arabic script is a very cryptic one. Learning it is not easy. Success in learning Arabic will pay rich dividends as the Middle East is a vast market for consumer goods and financial services, waiting to be tapped.
