Body Expresses What Your Mind Thinks

Body language is non-verbal language. People also communicate to others using gestures, postures and other physiologic signs. The non-verbal language is continuously being sent out by humans to communicate specific and definite messages such as aloofness with crossing his or her arms across the chest, hostility with blank or harsh facial expressions, attention with consistent eye contact, disbelief with scratching the chin or averted gaze or touching the ear, boredom with tilted head or unfocused eye contact, interest with extended eye contact, and lying with excessive blinking. The body language is also interpreted with such meanings. However, these are at best an observed pattern that is indicative. The body language when combined with gestures and verbal language can mean something different.

Messages are communicated by both hands and legs. Readiness is communicated by putting hands on the knees. Impatience is shown with hands on the hips. Self-control is indicated by locking hands behind back. Confidence is expressed by locking hands behind head. Indifference is shown by putting leg over the arm of the chair. Crossing arms shows submissiveness. An interest in a direction is indicated by pointing legs and arms in that particular direction.

Opinions differ on the extent of non-verbal communication within all forms of human communication. Some say that it is about 50 to 65 percent of all communication while others put it at as high as 80 percent. In terms of what are attempted to be communicated. It is believed that body language is best with expressing attitudes and feelings. When a person communicates, the body language, words and the tone of words are to be taken to get at the full import of what the person is trying to communicate. There are also the unintentional spontaneous or natural human gestures that constantly take place. These include such gestures an eye rub, a finger lock, a chin rest, a nose itch, an ear scratch, a lip touch, and a head scratch. Researchers are trying to see whether these too have any meaning. These are not so clear. Considerable research is going on to unravel the body language secrets .

Knowledge about reading body language has many benefits. It can improve your ability to understand and read people. It could assist in gaining confidence. It can improve your communication skills. It is also useful in mental health, both in diagnosis and treatment.
