If you want to immerse yourself in a Spanish speaking country to learn the language, South America is the best region in the world to do so. Go to South America for one month or two and you’ll definitely pick up a great deal of Spanish, go for three months or more and if you are speaking only Spanish you could definitely obtain a decent level of fluency. Provided you get yourself a sound basis in the structure and grammar of the language, you can definitely speak enough in 3 months to become very fluent indeed.
On top of that when you live in South America you will have a great time. And if you are happy and enjoying yourself you can pick up the language much more rapidly.
Comparing South America to other native Spanish speaking countries around the world, apart from being cheap, another advantage is that the South American accents are generally better. A lot of people don’t like the Spanish accent from Spain for example, because they have a lisp on the ‘th’ that they don’t have in South America. Except Argentinians, who have their own type of lisp. Here are some of the best countries to go to learn Spanish in South America:
Argentina – apart from the lisp on the ‘ll’ (which they pronounce ‘sh’) Argentia is a wonderful country to visit. It is a land of true culture: with some of the wolrd’s finest food, wine, dancing and conversation (people say). If you are more drawn to the natural beauty of South America, Chile might be a better place to go – also the country for outdoor activities. There is nothing you cannot do in Chile – be it skiiing, jungle trekking or surfing.
You migh want to consider getting a good Spanish course for travelling. You can read my review of one of the best ones here: About Synergy Spanish – a Detailed Review
If you want the very best Spanish accent, check out Venezuela. And Venezuela, like Chile, is a country that has every natural attraction you could wish for in one place. For Spanish learners who want the less travelled-to places and less tourism, Colombia migh be the place to visit. After a decade of civil strife, Colombia is now safe to visit, and an excellent place to learn Spanish.
And the most popular country to learn Spanish in South America is Ecuador, a place truly easy to visit, to travel around and to fall in love with.
