England has one of the longest histories of multi-culturism on the planet, and our country is home to people from nearly every country in the world. To be granted citizenship in England, an applicant needs to have a grasp of the English language however it is common for them to have very little knowledge of English. People will find it hard to be integrated within society when they cannot speak the common language. Why bother moving to England if you are only going to communicate with your family?

It might be a controversial issue, but if everyone living in England is able to speak fluent English, cultures are not being erased but we are able to share our cultural differences instead of been ignorant of them. TESOL teachers can help children and adults to get a better understanding of the English language, so that they can become a part of society and not alien to it.

Teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL) is a rewarding and skilled career. You need to hold a degree to become a TESOL teacher, but no teaching qualifications are required sometimes. People with a top class understanding of the English language can teach it to foreign speakers in the private sector without holding a degree. If you are working in a state school within the UK, a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) is required on top of your degree. This is ideal for recent graduates who would be willing to complete a PGCE as there is a much greater opportunity to become a TESOL teacher than in a more oversubscribed subject such as English, Geography and History.

With better job opportunities and the chance to meet people from different backgrounds and cultures on a daily basis, teaching English to speakers of other languages is a career full of opportunities.
