Fast Learn Spanish – Formal versus informal greetings.
In North America the Spanish population are decidedly less formal than their Latin America Spanish speaking counterparts.
It’s quite acceptable to greet someone you already know with a simple hola. If you are greeting somebody for the 1st time, it is always best to use a more formal greeting.
Buenos dias – Good morning.
Buenas tardes – Good afternoon.
Buenas noches – Good evening.
You can always back up the greeting with a formal title, this is the most polite thing to do and it’s one thing that you will hear going on a lot in Latin America.
Buenos dias, senor – Good morning, sir.
Buenos dias, senora – Good morning, ma’am.
Buenos dias, senorita – Good morning, miss.

If you are meeting 2 or maybe more people.
If by chance you have to greet 2 or more people at once, in Latin America, you should greet each person as an individual this is expected of you. This means a lot of double kissing with the opposite sex, and shaking hands quite a bit as well.
It is polite to ask people how they are doing. You would say como esta usted – how are you? to strangers and como estas, to friends and other people you know. Como translates to how. Estas means you are or are you.

You will come across numerous words with double meanings in the Spanish language all of the time! At times 1 word in English, warrants two or even more in Spanish in order to say the exact same thing and vice versa. So you will have to keep away from translating literally or you’ll come unstuck.
