There is no questioning the fact that English has become the default official language of the business world. In most companies it is required that top executives possess some understanding of the language. For individuals who wish to acquire jobs or start an education in English speaking nations, it is required that some for of evidence be given as to their proficiency in English language. It is because of this that English assessment tests have been set.

Of all the English tests that can be done, the most widely accepted is the IELT-International English Language Testing System.

Countries such as South Africa, Australia, Britain, Canada, Ireland and New Zealand are just some of the many nations that recognize the results of the IELTS. The IELTS is an accepted standard in the US with more than 2,000 institutions recognizing it’s results. It is also widely accepted by countless professional organizations.

Testing of the IELTS is done in a series of steps. Identifying all of these will allow you prepare on the areas which you might be less than ready for. Most people are of the opinion that the IELTS only quizzes you skills at writing-this is not true. You are also tested on your ability to listen, read and speak in English as well. How well you perform in each of these areas is scored on a point system that is ranged between 0 to 9. While the listening and speaking modules are similar for all tests, the reading and writing will differ depending on which IELTS version you are aiming for-i.e. the academic or general version.

Like most tests the secret to achieving an excellent score lies in your ability to listen and follow instructions as much as it does your ability to effectively communicate in English. For example during the listening module, which last for 40 minutes, you will be made to listen to 30 minutes of recording. You will then be tested based on what you heard during this period. The writing module asks questions which clear guidelines on how they should be answered. If you have been asked to answer a sentence in 3 words, you answer should be exactly that. Disobeying this instruction and yielding to a sudden flash of brevity or grandiloquence, will only earn you negative points.

The IELTS also pays attention to the writing skills of an individual with focus on writing and grammer construct as obvious examples.
