The Italian language is spoken by Italy’s 57 million people. Italian is spoken in such diverse places as Libya, Somalia and Ethiopia, which were once Italian colonies and, of course Austria, Switzerland.
Italian is considered one of the oldest, most romantic languages spoken today. The Italian spoken today is decendent from Latin. Italy became unified as a kingdom in 1860 at that time many different dialects came together to form the Italian language we know today.the father of the Italian language is Dante Alighier. The author of Divine Comedy is credited for unifying all the different dialects in the 14th century. Todays Italian has Tuscan dialects at its base…a bringing together of the languages of southern Italy and northern Italy. Learn Italian

Here are reviews of the best on the internet Italian Language courses. Here is the best online: Rocket Italian Language Software, Rosetta Stone Italian Language Software and Pimsleur Italian. There many others of courses, such as Lingo Italian, How to Learn Any Language and Berlitz Italian and for children, Power Glide Italian. Here are some more Italian Langauge courses on the market: Giovanna’s Learning Italian Like Crazy, Performance Italian Language Learning Software, Surefire Italian Learning Package and Tell Me More Performance Italian.

My favorite was Rocket Italian. So you have just a few months to study the Italian language I believe this Italian software course is for you. Not only is Rocket Italian effective in teaching you Italian, it was fun! Alex Marino, as the host and narrator, keeps things moving along with his sense of humor , this keeps the interactive lessons light and humorous. He teams up with Maria DiLorenzi, a native of Rome, who’s perfect and distinct accent will have you pronouncing italian words like a native. It won’t be long before you can imagine yourself spending time in Rome with Maria showing you the sites. She will become your virtual Italian friend in only a few lessons. The back and forth between Alex and Maria will keep you committed and focused. The program is entertaining which makes it easy to learn the language. The complete Rocket Italian Premium package includes 31 Interactive Audio Lessons, 31 Grammar & Culture Lessons, and the full range of MegaItalian software-based Learning Games. In summary, the program is very effective and fun and the price of $99 is a steal (regular price $299: The limited sales price was still in effect). Their customer service is great also! The amount of people around the world who have learned a langauge from Rocket Languages is now 352,510 (July, 2009). Learn Italian

The next program I looked at was the Rosetta Stone Italian Language Software. I was always fascinated by Rosetta Stone and their approach to teaching languages. The Rosetta Stone method unlocks your innate ability to learn a language. If you have failed with other methods before, you’ll be surprised how quickly you’ll learn with this method. Learn naturally, no translation or memorization required. Engage interactively and stay motivated with a range of activities and exercises. Speak confidently and build your conversational skills using Rosetta Stone’s speech recognition software. Have fun, the Rosetta Stone program makes language learning accessible and enjoyable. In my opinion, the Rosetta Stone Italian Language program is the most powerful language software product available. For both professionals and individuals and with customers like NASA, Pitney Bowes, U.S. State Department, U.S. Army, 10,000+ schools you would be in great company.

Rosetta Stone Italian uses a blend of interactive audio lessons, games, word association techniques and a unique organic teaching program that gets you to think in Italian…you may even dream in Italian! The Rosetta Stone Software is quite expensive, but, it is more then worth it. It is, by far, the most comprehensive and complete Italian language product on the web. Learn Italian

If you only want to learn Italian for conversational purposes then Pimsleur Italian is perfect. Pimsleur’s goal is to get you to speak the Italian language quickly. The program teaches you the most common vocabulary and grammar and teaches you ways to handle various common social scenarios.

The Pimsleur course uses CDs and is totally audio based. So if you are an audio learner then you will enjoy this course, but for visual learners the program’s one-dimensional approach may present a problem. If you are taking a vacation and need a dose of the Italian language then I recommend this course.

Pimsleur offers several products but their flagship program is the Italian Comprehensive Series. The Italian Comprehensive 1 Course cost around $200. The entire Italian Comprehensive 1,2 and 3 package retails for $600. All Pimsleur products are available online.

What is the most important reason why speaking Italian? That is a very a good question and a good reply will be to say “why not?” After all, it is beautiful language that is used not only in Italy but in different parts of Europe as well.

1. The top reason may be for you to be able to {interact-make conversation easily} with the locals if ever they don’t understand English. This will make it easy for you to ask your way if you get lost, make an order at the restourant, find the bus stop or read important notices that are posted.

2. The next reason believe it or not is all about politeness. You are a foreigner in their country and instead of them adjusting you should be the one to make the adjustments because they will surely do the same when they visit the US.

Living like an Italian is senseless without the knowledge of the Italian art and literature. Prominent writers like Dante Alighieri, Petrarch and Boccaccio are all Italian. Meanwhile, Italian artists include Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, and Michelangelo.

Some of the basic phrases you need to know include how to say good day, good afternoon or evening, goodbye, please, thank you, do you speak English, I don’t speak Italian, where is the bathroom and how much is this.

If you know that, the locals will be more than able to assist you despite you have limited knowledge to get more conversation with them.

But if you would like to strike a conversation with them, you have to learn other words and phrases. You can start out by buying a dictionary, listening to audio tapes and enrolling in a class. If you have a family that can speak Italian, the better so he or she can tell what do’s and don’t's.

You can also check online for other learning resources. Be aware that while some ask you to pay a certain fee, others are willing to teach you for free.

3. Another good reason why you should learn Italian is to diversify your self confident with people. If you apply for a job and it requires someone who speaks Italian fluently, your name will be in the final list of candidates for that position.

4. For those who want to pursue higher education, it is also beneficial since some schools require you to speak at least a foreign language.

5. There are fashion icons and popular designers are considered to be the finest in the world. To name a few Italian designers – Armani, Prada, Gucci, Versace and Valentino. Milan is one of the most important and prestigious centers of fashion in the world.

6. If ever you plan to work or decide to settle in Italy or somewhere in Europe, it will be easy for you to get close in with the people.

7. Learning Italian or any other language makes you understand their culture and who you are. This language skill will give you a better view of the world which helps shape your identity and makes you appreciate what you have.

8. Lastly, aside from the things, history and heritage that Italians should be proud of, Italians also provides much importance to their families. A strong and united family is very important for Italians. Families represent the moral strength of society. That is why family meals are longer than average meals in other culture. At home, water and wine are served with lunch and dinner. Children from age of 12 may begin to drink a small amount of wine with meals.

So why study Italian? How to learn and live like an Italian is not only by copying the way they speak and the way they act, but it is also important to make sure that the core values that they possess will be integrated in daily lives. Something you will find useful when applying for work, going back to school or simply while you are on vacation.

Learning to speak Italian (or another second language) is a great method of self improvement. The information you will discover whilst learning Italian will hold you in good stead not only for Italian but your own native tongue and even general knowledge. For example, your English grammar will improve if you learn Italian grammar. For instance, this could help you in your prose or even make you a better presenter or speech giver.

Learning a second language will make you more knowledgeable about your own culture because you will learn about Italian cultural traditions and references that will give you perspective on your own culture. This could and will make you more interesting to people. Everyone wants to be popular and learning to speak Italian will help in this desire. Other than that, speaking Italian could help you in a career or get a better job depending on the industry you work in or where you live.

So what should your first steps be if you are just starting out on your learn Italian objectives ?

Let's start at the beginning. How fast do you want to learn Italian ? The obvious answer is as soon as possible, but remember that it should fit into your lifestyle and the best way you learn new stuff. Setting overly-optimistic goals can lead to you getting frustrated which could make you lose heart and give up (which you don't want).

If you are relentlessly determined to learn to speak Italian then I would say go to Italy and take an intensive, immersion course and live there for a few months, but you'd need plenty of free time and few responsibilities. Then live in Italy for a while. You could even do some simple jobs there too. If you do all these things I would say you will have a good understanding of the language within 6 months to a year. You'll certainly be able to chat confidently and understand what is going on.

Unfortunately, most people don’t have this luxury. They have a time sapping job or have to care for their family. Unfortuantely they do not have the time to put towards learning Italian.

If this sounds like you then you need to organize your time and structure your learning so that you are working smarter rather than harder. Set up a study routine. Determine a given day and time when all your concentration is set to learning Italian. No distractions or other things to do. Pure focus on the task.

Get a good home study course or take a night class so that you have a specific thing that will be the focal point of your studies. As you get your teeth into the meat (or nut roast if you are a vegetarian) of the course you will find that you can concentrate quicker on the lesson at hand.

The course is your focal point. This content should take up 80% of the time you have set aside to learning to speak Italian however as you get more discerning you can utilize other methods. You will be able to use other methods that are less formal and more fun to learn to speak Italian. So you could check ou the latest Italian movies or TV programs. This will help you in many ways like vocabulary or grammar construction. But it will be enjoyable too and not like a lesson. When you reach this level, learning Italian will just be something you do rather than a conscious act that may become tedious or boring. This heralds the start of your language learning proper.

Your next step is to decide on the type of course or class you want to use/do to progress your Italian language skills.

Depending on various reasons, including where you live in the world may explain your desire to learn Italian. In the United States, for example, there are many people that have Italian family and heritage that can motivate them to learn to speak Italian. Being bilingual can improve your career prospects and is a skill that few others will have.

For those in Europe, living or visiting Italy will obviously be much improved with some Italian language skills. Retiring folks that wish to settle in Italy would also benefit with language skills.

Thus, if you have the desire to speak Italian, what is the best way to learn Italian such that it is a fast process ? Not many people like to learn words and verbs in a rote fashion so what is the best way to learn Italian ?

Learning grammar and vocabulary is never fun. Human beings are remarkably lazy when they have to learn things like words or formal rules !). Ultimately, we pick up these skills through repetition and a desire to use the language.

Observing how a baby learns their native tongue is a perfect illustration of this method. The baby hears and watches his/her mother saying words. At some point in the future the baby starts to understand the words meaning. The next want is to be involved in the speaking.

S/he will try to make simple attempts at talking and speaking the language. He/she effectively mimics the words and sounds made by his/her parents. Inevitably s/he will be able to say the the odd word or two. They may not sound exactly right but he/she refines the pronunciation by watching and listening to people around him/her until it sounds right.

Eventually, he/she will be able to speak simple sentences like ‘I want an orange’. When this stage arrives, he/she has everything needed to learn the language. Soon his/her ability to speak will come on at a rapid pace.

He/she will learn new words and start using them. He/she will communicate with people around and learn from these little everyday language lessons. This will convince him/her to learn more of the language. He/she will listen to his parents and grandparents who will teach him/her new words and explain meanings. He/she will never stop learning new things about the language just like everyone else.

To duplicate this method when learning a second language, you want to learn through immersion. The immersion process starts by spending time in a country where the language you desire to learn is the first language.

This may be extremely nerve wracking initially. You are going to a country where you don't speak the language, although you will probably have some simple words and understanding of the language. You will be taking a course in the country where the language is spoken, thus replicating the way a child may learn his or her first language.

You will have no option but to listen to this language. If you want to speak you will have to speak in this language. all the strategies that a child uses to learn his native tongue will be in place for you.

Learning a new language is a complicated process and having the right attitude, like a genuine desire to talk to people, can help when you hit the wall in you language learning goal. If you take a course in Italy then the support in your desire to learn will be greater.

So I would suggest the best way to learn Italian quickly is to spend a little time in Italy and take an intensive course at the same time. Another tip is to stay in the country a little bit longer after the course so that you can practice outside of the formal lessons with locals. Ideally, you should work and live there for a few months. This will do wonders for your understanding of the language. Keep on studying the language. You never stop learning.
